Thailand’s 53-year-old afternoon alcohol sales ban has been lifted

The country has entered a 180-day trial period, allowing alcohol to be purchased between 14:00 and 17:00 to boost the tourism sector.

06 Dec 2025

On December 2, 2025, the Royal Gazette declared that alcohol sales during the afternoon hours, from 14:00 to 17:00, would be allowed country-wide. However, this new relaxation of the rule is in effect for only 180 days as a trial to boost tourism. It is noteworthy that consuming alcohol remains permitted until 01:00 in licensed establishments like restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues.

This lift ends a ban that was implemented 53 years ago by the military government back in 1972. Despite the long-standing prohibition, there was already an exemption allowing some licensed hotels, entertainment venues, and airports to sell and serve alcohol to their customers during those afternoon hours.

There is still one key exception to the new rule: the alcohol sales ban remains in place at Hua Lamphong Station, according to the announcement from the Office of the Prime Minister. While purchasing and consuming alcohol on the premises and onboard trains are still not prohibited, Hua Lamphong does have designated event spaces where alcohol sales and consumption are admissible.

This rule means that during the festive months in Thailand, alcohol can be purchased nationwide from 11:00 to 00:00, starting from December 3, 2025. Once the 180-day trial period is over, the government will conduct a review to consider whether the lift will continue permanently.
